AND6 in retrospect

The final day was excellent with NA stations on most frequencies by 21h UTC. For instance 1380 CKPC was audible before 21:00, less than half an hour later their country songs splattered European stations on 1377 kHz. The strong signals continued all night and into the morning when we had to prepare to leave.

Andøya is normally not a place where you can trust weather to be nice every day. Both during AND5 and AND6 we were lucky and avoided the strong autumn winds. The day after we left weather became severe with hurricane force winds. A main road further north on the island had to be closed because of flying objects and several buildings had their roof ripped off.

I’ve had a closer look on a series of recordings made one evening during AND6. I selected the frequency 1290 kHz. CJBK surfaced quite early and was the clear frequency dominant. However, a number of other stations were noted before midnight. First WMCS, then WIRL and KKAR. Finally, as early as 23:37 UTC, KOUU appeared and later on had an occasionally strong signal.

We didn’t think AND6 would surpass AND5. We were hoping for some new stations, we got much more. As it is AND6 will be what we measure DX success by in the future.

AND6 update October 30

Huge NA signals on most frequencies since before 22h UTC yesterday evening, the first NA signals (other than on the nearly always present 680 and 1230) were noted as early as 20h UTC. On reviewing a few of the recordings from the evening on October 28, many interesting daytime stations were observed.

We are very pleased with AND6, certainly with what we’ve heard and even more with the quality of the recordings. Most of them are noise free (in the sense that we haven’t detected any noise attributable to electrical sources or the equipment used), as we’ve been very conscious of removing factors which could add noise.

As we will be leaving tomorrow, there will be no further updates.

AND6 update October 29

The Canadian dominants are back and conditions aren’t quite as interesting as they’ve been the previous few days. Sure, very strong signals are noted and some interesting stations are probably around, but they are harder to find now that most frequencies have stable signals. NA stations were noted early in the evening, but we haven’t had the time yet to listen for daytimers.

AND6 is now on YouTube, see here.

If the current conditions continue for the last two days of AND6, this might be the last update.

AND6 update October 28

Yesterday was one of those days a DXer will remember for years. The night was excellent for LA, with a more northerly focus than during the previous night. NA stations dominated on the other antennas with conditions becoming good to excellent after 02h UTC. While it is possible they may have forgotten to switch to their nighttime pattern, hearing 1580 KMIK for hours on end was fun. Generally speaking the best reception was towards the southern US, from Florida to California. With so many FL stations heard it was no wonder that the Cubans thrived, several stations that I’ve received weakly or not at all previously had huge signals. Of course, Mexican stations weren’t shy either, one example being 830 La Grande de Sinaloa.

AND6 update October 27

Wow! Quite a night and morning at AND6. Signals from Brazil emerged from the noise just before 20h UTC. We were treated to an excellent all Latin America night with astonishing signals from stations like 1320 Radio Perú. Although we haven’t listened to many of the recordings yet, on just one five minute segment there were stations from Brazil, Argentina (for instance 1290 Radio Murialdo), Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Lots of research will be needed as there are a large number of slightly off-frequency stations. Oh, and some seriously off-frequency (like 1320.4 Radio Azul).

From 06 to 09h UTC there was an excellent opening to the southwestern US with better signals than on any (our) daytime opening during AND5. Incredibly 1500 Radio Santa Rosa was present all the time with a huge signal, even on our antenna covering the US west coast.

A guesstimate is that we will need at least 6 months to work through all the recordings from the night and morning.

Yesterday one of the better catches of AND6 confirmed our reception, the station is located in the southern city of Mobile.

AND6 update October 26

Last night wasn’t very eventful. Although a number of stations from Brazil and Argentina were noted, signals were unimpressive. A very nice opening to the eastern part of North America occurred 05-08 UTC, one example 1450 WKIP. We are expecting improving conditions as the current coronal hole disturbance eases.

AND6 update Oct.25

Yesterday was on the boring side with an occasionally dead band and brief periods with rather good signals. Stations like 1150 KSAL, 960 KMA and 600 WMT were heard with exceptional clarity. Not much of interest in the evening either. After midnight conditions to NA improved gradually and became fairly good this morning. Some graveyarders like 1400 KIHH and 1490 KEYG sounded like they were on clear channels, truly stunning signal quality. The antenna targeting South America pulled in many Argentinians 02-05 UTC.
